SUDC: Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood

In December, 2007, friends of ours tragically lost their precious little girl, Lauren.  Initially, the family was told cause of death was most likely meningitis.  Lauren, however, was apparently not sick prior to taking her afternoon nap from which she did not awake.

A quote from Lauren's webpages:  "Since Lauren was 16 months old when she passed away, her death was not considered Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).  Instead, it belongs to a lesser-known category. Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC), which describes the inexplicable deaths of healthy children between the ages of one and eleven....."     Link:  http://www.laurentrymucha.com/SUDC.html  ......

I have located a study out of Spain re heart rhythm abnormalities and sudden death in persons from age 1 to 35.  This would likely be linked to heart rhythm disturbance possibly caused by disruption of heart's normal electric activity.   The 2003 study indicates in the future, molecular analysis may provide more information.   I will make a note to write to the authors of the Spanish study to learn whether they have any updated information re intracellular identification, etc.     Link:

There is a webpage re "SCA" -- "Sudden cardiac arrest in young" that states:   "SCA" is a condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly and unexpectedly due to a malfunction in the electric system.  The malfunction that causes sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening abnormal rhythm, or arrhythmia.  The most common arrhythmia is ventricular fibrillation.  When in ventricular fibrillation, the heart's rhythm is so chaotic that the heart merely quivers, and is unable to pump blood to the body and brain  (this is called 'fibrillating')  Once a heart has entered ventricular fibrillation, sudden cardiac arrest occurs......"     Link:   http://www.woodsidefire.org/aedfoundation.html   .......

"SCA" occasionally occurs in young athletes.    There are several sources when searching net.

Another quote from Lauren's website:   "Lauren was such an energetic little girl, so full of joy and wonder.  She loved going up and down the stairs until her hair stood on end from so much static electricity.  She really loved getting pushed around the house on her tricycle; the faster she went the bigger her smile...."    Link:     http://www.laurentrymucha.com/aboutlauren.html   .........

There will never be an easy time for Lauren's parents to deal with the possibility that their adorable little one may have died from exposure to electric fields in her bedroom.   I have no knowledge about the possibility that Lauren may have been going up and down stairs "until her hair stood on end" prior to lying down for her nap.   I can only speculate as to how that potential factor may have played a role.   I have not yet acquired information regarding placement of Lauren's bed in conjunction with any electric meter, gas meter, electric appliances or telephone equipment (the telephone equipment being unlikely due to her age unless close to wall in a room adjacent to hers).

It is important to learn types of fabrics for clothing Lauren was wearing before being placed in her bed and also whether she wore the same clothing to bed.   The same information is important re her blanket and whether or not she was carrying the blanket before going down for her nap.

The facts surrounding this case will hopefully provide more clues to potential causes of SIDS.

There is a new baby in the home now.   He was born a few weeks ago and had surgery for a narrowed aorta a couple days after his birth.   He is reported to be doing very well at this time.   I obviously have "major concerns" that the little boy may be similarly exposed but pray that the information I provided and that has subsequently been passed on to his grandfather,  will help toward preventing another tragedy!

I continue to work with an emphasis on the critical need to warn parents about close electric field bedroom exposures.   Sadly, I now have to wonder whether children may need some quiet time between play and bedtime.........    As I said, I do not know whether "static in hair" was a factor prior to Lauren's nap or what role, if any, that may have played in possibly interfering with Lauren's heart function/rhythm.    Take care  -  Joanne
